Kalahari Hunting Camp

From cattle ranch to wildlife reserve

From cattle ranch to wildlife reserve

Our Kalahari home has not always looked the way it does today.

The property was originally operated as a cattle ranch, shaped by generations of livestock farming and the fencing that came with it.

We wanted to do something different.

Rather than intensively managing wildlife or turning the property into a conventional game ranch, our aim was to rewild the old cattle ranch and allow the land and its wildlife to find their own balance.

Approximately half of the property is now game fenced, and we removed the internal fences so that wildlife could move naturally across the landscape.

The difference has been remarkable.

As the land recovered and wildlife was given the freedom to move across larger areas, biodiversity increased and wildlife populations flourished. Today, the property supports healthy, self-sustaining populations of game that live and reproduce naturally in their environment.

Our goal is not to create a place where wildlife is intensively bred, artificially managed or constantly manipulated.

We want the property to function as a private game reserve.

The wildlife belongs to the land, and the land provides the habitat, water and space in which it can thrive.

Wild game. Wild country. Fair chase.

This approach also shapes the way we hunt.

Although part of the property is game fenced, the hunting experience is not a managed or artificial one.

There are no small enclosures or intensively managed hunting blocks where animals are kept for the sole purpose of hunting.

The animals move freely through a large, natural landscape. They live as wild animals should, using the bushveld, open plains and waterholes according to the seasons.

The result is hunting that is every bit as challenging and fair chase as hunting in a free-range environment.

You still have to find the animal.

You still have to read the tracks, understand the wind, follow the terrain and get close.

And when the opportunity finally comes, it has been earned.

For us, that is what hunting should be.

A landscape that works

The other half of the property continues to operate as a working cattle ranch.

This creates an interesting balance between agriculture and wildlife, and the unfenced areas also support significant populations of free-ranging game.

Wildlife does not recognise the boundaries we draw on a map. The larger landscape remains connected, and animals move through it naturally.

It is this combination of rewilded habitat, working cattle country and free-ranging wildlife that makes our Kalahari home unique.

We are proud of what the property has become—but more importantly, we are proud of what it represents.

A former cattle ranch has been given a new role.

Not simply as a place to hunt animals, but as a place where wildlife can thrive, where natural habitats are valued and where responsible hunting forms part of a much larger conservation story.

Our aim was never simply to have more game.

It was to restore a landscape where wildlife could flourish naturally.

And today, when you sit beneath the camel thorns and watch animals come to the waterhole, you can see the result.
