The desert warrior of Namibia

Few animals represent Namibia quite like the Gemsbok, or Oryx. With its striking black-and-white facial markings, powerful build and long, rapier-like horns, it is perfectly adapted to the harsh landscapes of the Kalahari and Namib.

The Gemsbok is a true survivor. It can go for remarkably long periods without drinking, obtaining much of its moisture from the plants it eats. During dry periods it will browse, dig for roots and tubers, and seek out moisture-rich plants such as tsamma melons. Its ability to tolerate extreme heat and conserve water allows it to thrive where few other large antelope can.

Both bulls and cows carry horns, making the Gemsbok one of the more challenging antelope to identify correctly in the field. Bulls generally have thicker, straighter horns, while cows tend to have longer, more slender horns. Mature animals can weigh around 530 lbs and stand approximately 4 feet at the shoulder.

Hunting the Gemsbok

Hunting Gemsbok is an exciting combination of glassing, patience and careful stalking. They are exceptionally alert, with excellent eyesight, hearing and an acute sense of smell. Getting within range in the open Kalahari terrain can be a real challenge.

And this is an animal that deserves respect. A wounded Gemsbok is powerful, fast and armed with formidable horns. A well-placed first shot is essential.

For many hunters, pursuing a mature Gemsbok across the open landscapes of Namibia is one of the defining experiences of a Southern African safari.
