Namibia's distinctive impala
The Black-faced Impala is not simply a colour variation of the common impala. It is a distinct subspecies, Aepyceros melampus petersi, naturally associated with north-western Namibia and south-western Angola. Genetic research supports its distinct subspecific status.
Its characteristic black facial markings, darker coloration and limited natural distribution make it one of Namibia's most distinctive antelope.
A mature ram stands approximately 3 feet at the shoulder and weighs around 140 lbs, with females being smaller.
Hunting the Black-faced Impala
The black-faced impala is an alert and wary animal, and its limited natural distribution makes it a particularly interesting Namibian trophy.
For the hunter, identifying a mature ram and getting within range without disturbing the herd is the essence of the challenge.
