Namibia – land of contrast!
Namibia is one of Africa’s best hunting destinations for both big game and plains game. It even offers some of the best bird hunting opportunities in the world. Namibia is a very politically stable country with a very well developed infrastructure.
Namibia possesses a treasure trove of game to be hunted on pristine wilderness locations. This is a fact that has not been missed by dozens of hunters that land at Windhoek airport every day.
Welcome to the Safari world of Schalk Pienaar.
Schalk started out in 2006 as a freelance professional hunter. He has hunted an average of over 200 days per year, guiding trophy hunters in all corners of Namibia, gaining extremely valuable experience and getting to know the country like the back of his hand.
Schalk is a fully licensed dangerous game professional hunter in Namibia and he invites you to come and share the beauty of Namibia, its people, wide open spaces and the wildlife with him. Schalk mainly hunts on his family ranch in Eastern Namibia. The ranch is situated on the western edge of the Kalahari close to the Botswana border, only two and a half hours drive from the airport. However he also hunts many other ranches and concession areas scattered through out the country in order for you to have the opportunity to hunt every single huntable species that Namibia has to offer. He has more than 30 plains game and dangerous game species available.
As for Plains Game we have phenomenal trophy quality! It is not the norm, but it is not uncommon to shoot a Sable with 45 inch plus horns, kudu of over 60 inches and gemsbuck over 40 inches. Namibia is also the only country where you can hunt Hartman Zebra, Black faced Impala and Damara Dik-Dik. It is also one of the few countries in Southern Africa where one can hunt the majestic Roan Antelope and Red Lechwe.
Namibia has 20 huntable game bird species. Sandgrouse is considered by many experienced bird hunters all over the world as the ultimate wing shooting experience Africa has to offer.
The Zambezi region, formally known as the Caprivi strip is well known for big elephant and fantastic buffalo hunting.
The trophy hunting season opens February 1st and goes through November 30th. Plains game hunting remains great through out the entire season, while hunting for dangerous game in most concession areas is better in the drier months of July – November. Bird hunting is best in September, October and November.
For plains game hunting a medium calibre rifle like the various .30 calibers are recommended. You can expect to shoot distances of 100 yards up to 250 yards, with the occasional longer shot. You will be shooting most of your shots of shooting sticks, so it is recommended to practice shooting of sticks at the range.
For dangerous game the .375 calibre is the minimum legal requirement.
For wing shooting I recommend bringing a 12 gauge shotgun, because of shell availability.
Every hunting client is allowed to enter the country with 2 hunting rifles and a maximum amount of 80 rounds per calibre. Bringing in you’re hunting rifle is a very easy process, once you arrive at the airport you fill out a very short application form and they will issue you with a temporary import permit.
Windhoek is the Capital of Namibia and the international Airport Hosea Kutaku is situated 20 minutes towards the East. With a well maintained road system in Namibia, traveling by vehicle between the airport and hunting areas is quite enjoyable.
Namibia has some spectacular scenery and some great family friendly activities, so do not be under the impression that it is a man’s world only, bring your family!
